With more than 5.6 million affected with HIV or AIDS South Africa is currently experiencing one of the most sever AID epidemics in the world. Medical workers and aid organizations in South Africa are confronted daily with nearly impossible odds; over one tenth of the South African population has HIV/AIDS, with younger age groups showing infection rates as high as 30 percent. HIV is so widespread and prevalent it can be difficult to imagine for those living in less-affected countries.
A number of factors have been blamed for the increasing severity of South Africa's AIDS epidemic, and debate has raged about rather the government's response has been sufficient. Stigma and discrimination continue to divert proper attention to effective preventative care initiatives. For South Africa there are tremendous challenges remaining in the fields of HIV education, prevention and care. PHA believe that only a collective effort along with a serious and bold plan can turn the tide against new HIV/AIDS cases.
